Improving the organizational models: process mining as a tool for telediabetology hospital integration

Purpose This article aims to develop a process-based organizational model for telediabetology, integrating telemedicine into primary prevention of diabetes. It seeks to define roles, processes and workflows involving various healthcare actors to enhance early detection by simulation tool. The goal is to provide an efficient organizational model suitable for telediabetology. Design/methodology/approach The study constructs a structured organizational framework utilizing Unified Modeling Language (UML) and Business Process Modelling and Notation (BPMN) standards to model telemedicine processes for diabetes prevention. It involves defining a diagnostic and therapeutic care pathway (PDTA) with multiple actors, including GPs, hospital staff, pharmacists and service providers. Performance evaluation employs a diffusion heat simulation to analyze workload distribution and process following a root cause analysis performed with the Ishikawa tool. The model's scalability is tested through simulation, enabling assessment of organizational efficacy and workload balancing within a regional health network. Findings The proposed model successfully formalizes roles and workflows in telediabetology, demonstrating effective workload distribution and process coordination among healthcare actors. Simulation results indicate that the organizational framework can optimize resource allocation while maintaining patient safety and care quality. The heat diffusion approach provides valuable insights into process performance, facilitating iterative improvements. Overall, the model offers a methodology, adaptable for developing compatible with telemedicine networks aimed at preventing diabetes and its complications in diverse healthcare settings. Originality/value This study introduces an original process-based organizational model for telemedicine in primary diabetes prevention, utilizing Business Process Technology, UML and BPMN standards. It uniquely integrates a diffusion heat simulation to evaluate workload distribution among diverse healthcare actors, establishing a scalable framework for preventive healthcare networks. The model emphasizes roles, workflows and decision-making aiming to reduce hospitalizations and chronicity. Its innovative approach combines organizational formalization with simulation techniques, offering a foundational, adaptable methodology for enhancing telemedicine efficiency, equity and sustainability within evolving healthcare systems.
