Abyssal Claims: A FAIR-aligned integration platform for deep-sea and terrestrial mining transparency

Abyssal Claims is an independently developed, non-commercial web platform (https://something-rare.com) that integrates more than forty publicly funded and open-licensed geospatial datasets onto a single interactive three-dimensional globe. It is designed to make the environmental and governance context of deep-sea mineral extraction and terrestrial industrial mining legible to researchers, journalists, policy analysts and the general public. Version 1.1 (28 April 2026) extends v1.0 with: - A new sea-domain layer "Offshore Activities" — 6,694 polygons covering government-issued concessions for offshore oil and gas, offshore wind, carbon capture and storage, and seabed mining inside national EEZ and Extended Continental Shelf jurisdictions, drawn from 23 authoritative registries: BOEM/BSEE (USA), EMODnet Human Activities (EU), NSTA + Crown Estate UK + Crown Estate Scotland (UK), Sodir/NPD (Norway), GEUS SAMBA (Denmark), NRCan/CNSOPB (Canada Nova Scotia), C-NLOPB (Canada Newfoundland & Labrador), CNH/SIGSA (Mexico), ANP (Brazil), NOPTA (Australia), NZP&M (New Zealand), ESDM Migas Geoportal (Indonesia), PASA (South Africa), MRA (Papua New Guinea), MME via Landfolio (Namibia), SBMA via Landfolio (Cook Islands), MEEI/IMA (Trinidad & Tobago), GNPC (Ghana), PMP (Guyana), IPAS/GSI (Ireland), ANH (Colombia), and PERUPETRO via INGEMMET (Peru). Approximately 70% of global EEZ industrial exploitation by polygon count.- Six new ocean-observation source ingests feeding the Baseline Monitoring Density derived product: World Ocean Database (NOAA NCEI), PANGAEA dataset registry, BCO-DMO (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution), NOAA NCEI dataset catalogue, OBIS-SEAMAP standalone records, and CCHDO hydrographic stations (Scripps).- Updated record counts for several existing layers: biodiversity_hotspots 3.7M to 5.1M, mining-versus-fires overlap 1,111 to 118,797 (full rebuild after stored geography column migration), and smaller increases across tailings, Argo, air quality, and active fires. This deposit documents the platform at a level sufficient to verify its outputs and reimplement equivalent functionality. It contains: - Methods paper (PDF, 23 pages): data sources, system architecture, ingestion strategies including the new multi-registry composite pattern for Offshore Activities, MVT tile generation, overlap view refresh, SAR×AIS dark-vessel detection, plume backtracking, baseline monitoring density grid, search-engine discoverability, limitations, FAIR alignment, references.- Data sources inventory (Excel, 6 sheets): complete per-layer catalogue of 23 sea layers (including Offshore Activities), 13 land layers, 21 derived products and ocean observation registries, refresh cadence, and licence summary.- Architecture diagram (SVG and PNG).- README (PDF): deposit overview and v1.1 changelog.- CITATION.cff: machine-readable citation metadata. The source code of the platform is not part of this deposit by design. The pipeline is documented at an algorithmic level consistent with established scientific publication practice for research software. Abstract

Abyssal Claims is an independently developed, non-commercial web platform (https://something-rare.com) that integrates more than forty publicly funded and open-licensed geospatial datasets onto a single interactive three-dimensional globe. It is designed to make the environmental and governance context of deep-sea mineral extraction and terrestrial industrial mining legible to researchers, journalists, policy analysts and the general public. Version 1.1 (28 April 2026) extends v1.0 with: - A new sea-domain layer "Offshore Activities" — 6,694 polygons covering government-issued concessions for offshore oil and gas, offshore wind, carbon capture and storage, and seabed mining inside national EEZ and Extended Continental Shelf jurisdictions, drawn from 23 authoritative registries: BOEM/BSEE (USA), EMODnet Human Activities (EU), NSTA + Crown Estate UK + Crown Estate Scotland (UK), Sodir/NPD (Norway), GEUS SAMBA (Denmark), NRCan/CNSOPB (Canada Nova Scotia), C-NLOPB (Canada Newfoundland & Labrador), CNH/SIGSA (Mexico), ANP (Brazil), NOPTA (Australia), NZP&M (New Zealand), ESDM Migas Geoportal (Indonesia), PASA (South Africa), MRA (Papua New Guinea), MME via Landfolio (Namibia), SBMA via Landfolio (Cook Islands), MEEI/IMA (Trinidad & Tobago), GNPC (Ghana), PMP (Guyana), IPAS/GSI (Ireland), ANH (Colombia), and PERUPETRO via INGEMMET (Peru).
