BARRIERS TO LEARNING: EXPLORING EDUCATIONAL CHALLENGES OF RURAL STUDENTS IN NORTH BENGAL

This study explores the educational challenges faced by rural students in North Bengal, with a focus on the socio-economic, infrastructural, and institutional barriers that hinder effective learning. Adopting a qualitative research approach, the study is based on primary data collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with undergraduate students from rural backgrounds. The findings reveal that financial constraints, lack of proper educational infrastructure, and limited access to digital resources significantly affect students’ academic engagement and performance. Additionally, factors such as family responsibilities, lack of parental support, and inadequate career guidance further restrict their educational progress. The digital divide has emerged as a critical issue, particularly in the context of increasing dependence on online learning platforms. Despite these challenges, many students demonstrate resilience and determination to continue their education and improve their socio-economic conditions. The study highlights the urgent need for targeted policy interventions, improved infrastructure, and inclusive educational support systems to bridge the gap between rural and urban education. It also emphasizes the importance of strengthening institutional mechanisms to ensure equal learning opportunities for all students, thereby promoting educational equity and social development in rural regions.
