Nine Factors for Climate-Responsive Urban Design: A Multi-Scalar Framework for Urban Density as a Climatic Condition

Climate-responsive urban design has become a central concern in contemporary urban discourse, particularly in subtropical and tropical cities of the Global South that are densifying under intensifying heat stress. While urban density is frequently promoted as sustainable and efficient, it remains predominantly treated as a quantitative planning parameter rather than as a climatic condition that actively reorganises environmental performance, bodily experience, and social life. This working paper presents the Nine Factors, an analytical framework for reconceptualising urban density as a climatic condition: urban cultures of climate and density; urban climatic ecosystems under density; bodies in dense public space; the environmental and social economy of density; climatic urban imaginaries of density; urban climatic infrastructures in dense contexts; the ethics of urban care in dense cities; urban climatic geometry and density; and urban atmospheres in dense environments. The framework is structured by a multi-scalar model combining scales of space, time, impact, and action. It incorporates and extends what the morphological tradition (Berghauser Pont and Haupt, Spacematrix, 2010, revised 2021) and the urban vitality tradition (Gehl, Jacobs, Montgomery) measure, adding the climatic, bodily, temporal, and ethical dimensions these frameworks systematically leave unaddressed. The framework positions climate change as a spatial, social, and ethical urban design problem rather than a building-scale technical challenge, with empirical orientation drawn from dense cities of the Southern Hemisphere. This deposit establishes public record and authorship of the Nine Factors framework, developed by Diego Juca de Lima Oliveira, 2025, as part of ongoing doctoral research in progress.
