This article seeks to elucidate foundational considerations for designing learning experiences that effectively foster the attainment of scientific com-petencies. This is achieved through an examination of a professional development program, which aims to cultivate competencies aligned with science and engineering practices (SEPs). The core considerations are delineated into three key aspects. First, the creation of STEM scenarios that present challenging problem-solving tasks encourages learners to approach problems with a systematic and realistic perspective, rather than relying on trial and error. Such an approach entails the application of an engineering design process for developing solutions. Second, establishing learning objectives that highlight SEPs will provide clear direction for designing STEM activities that are congruent with the nature of STEM work and the engineering design process. Finally, the systematic planning and implementation of SEPs during STEM activities will support learners in comprehending the essence of STEM education. This involves integrating interdisciplinary concepts that align with scientific and engineering practices. Keywords: Learning design, STEM education, Science competencies
