Defining the 'Unaffiliated Independent Researcher' (UIR): A Formal Taxonomy for an Emerging Category of Knowledge Producer
This paper proposes a formal definition of the "Unaffiliated Independent Researcher" (UIR), a category of knowledge producer not currently recognised within dominant research taxonomies. Existing classifications, primarily institutional academics, corporate researchers, and government scientists, fail to account for individuals who generate substantial, verifiable research output independently of any formal affiliation. Drawing on the structural shift enabled by open-access infrastructure, the paper outlines the conditions that have made independent, DOI-registered research production possible at scale. It introduces a four-part definitional framework based on intellectual autonomy, verifiable output, infrastructure sovereignty, and non-affiliation. The study further grounds the proposed category in an empirical case, demonstrating that high-volume, independently produced, and externally acknowledged research output is already operational across global repositories and indexing systems. Without formal recognition of the UIR category, such contributions remain systematically unaccounted for in national and international research metrics. The paper argues that recognising the UIR is essential to align research classification systems with the realities of a decentralised, open-access knowledge economy, where intellectual contribution is increasingly defined by verifiable output rather than institutional affiliation.
