FDM printing in the correction of temporary orthopedic structures: a study of adhesive strength and tightness of the joint

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to improve the quality of prosthetic treatment through the development of methods for correction and modification of temporary prosthetic constructions using FDM printing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: were used. Elements made of various polymers (PLA, ABS, PC, PMMA) produced by FDM printing were applied to their surfaces. Adhesive strength was evaluated using a Zwick Roell Z010 testing machine under shear and tensile tests, while the microleakage of the bonding zone was assessed with dye penetration. RESULTS: <0.05). The highest values were demonstrated by PLA (up to 137.5±27.1 MPa) and ABS (up to 179.8±41.5 MPa). Microleakage testing revealed the absence of dye penetration in the bonding zone after monomer treatment. CONCLUSION: The proposed method of correction using FDM printing combined with preliminary substrate treatment improves the mechanical strength and sealing properties of the bonds, confirming its clinical potential for the repair and reinforcement of temporary prostheses.
