Laboratory examination of the desensitizers. Part 2: X-ray fluorescence elemental analysis

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to compare the chemical composition of the preparations «Gluftored» (GF, VladMiVa, Russia) and «Dentin-Versiegelungs liquid» (DVL, Humanchemie GmbH, Germany). Both drugs were two-component systems that seal the dentinal tubules to treat dentine hypersensitivity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 18 teeth extracted from the volunteers. The age of the patients ranged from 42 to 65 years. Diamond discs were used to prepare the tooth slices, and then the teeth were chipped with a chisel. The GF and DVL groups included 6 tooth chips. X-ray fluorescence elemental analysis was performed using a scanning electron microscope with an energy dispersion analyzer. The elemental analysis was performed on the most common chemical elements in tooth tissues and studied preparations: calcium, phosphorus, oxygen, fluorine, silicon, magnesium, copper, iron, sodium and sulfur. RESULTS: A "composite" consisting of fluorides and silicates of calcium and magnesium was found on the surface of the teeth chips treated with DVL and GF. These compounds occurred during a chemical reaction between the two main components of these drugs, calcium hydroxide and magnesium fluorosilicate. In addition, the samples treated with DVL contained calcium sulfate and cuprate, the product of the reaction of copper sulfate with calcium hydroxide, as well as sodium fluoride, the product of the reaction with calcium hydroxide of sodium fluorosilicate. CONCLUSION: The chemical composition of the Dentin sealing liquid includes, in addition to the obturating and antimicrobial components, easily soluble sodium fluoride. The absence of sodium fluoride in the sealing composite material indicates its greater uniformity and, consequently, higher stability in an aqueous solution. The presence of sodium fluoride plays a negative role in the formation of a sealing desensitizing composite.
