Establishing an academic minor in emergency management

This study examines the feasibility and strategic value of implementing an undergraduate minor in emergency management within the California State University (CSU) system. Using a descriptive analysis of publicly available academic catalogs, program websites, institutional records, and policy documents from major CSU campuses, this research systematically maps the breadth, structure, and interdisciplinary potential of existing minors. While basic quantitative measures, such as unit counts and cross-campus comparisons were used to summarize curricular patterns, this study primarily relies on qualitative and document-based information. Findings highlight the CSULB minor in emergency management as a replicable model that balances strategic fit, interdisciplinary relevance, and practical implementation. The study concludes with recommendations for system-wide adoption of the minor and future research on student outcomes and policy alignment.

Abstract

While basic quantitative measures, such as unit counts and cross-campus comparisons were used to summarize curricular patterns, this study primarily relies on qualitative and document-based information. Findings highlight the CSULB minor in emergency management as a replicable model that balances strategic fit, interdisciplinary relevance, and practical implementation. The study concludes with recommendations for system-wide adoption of the minor and future research on student outcomes and policy alignment.
