Sustainable Construction in Iraq: Challenges, Realities, and the Road Forward

Iraq stands at a pivotal juncture in its built environment development. Decades of conflict, chronic underinvestment, rapid population growth, and worsening climate conditions have converged to produce one of the most acute construction and housing crises in the Arab world. This paper examines the current state of the construction sector in Iraq, with particular focus on Baghdad, through data drawn exclusively from authoritative international and national sources: the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the World Bank, the International Energy Agency (IEA), and the Iraqi government's official fiscal planning documents. The paper analyses the housing deficit, the country's acute climate vulnerability, the scale of public investment in infrastructure, and the imperative of integrating sustainable construction principles into Iraq's national development agenda. Keywords:Sustainable ConstructionIraqBaghdadHousing DeficitClimate VulnerabilityBuilding Information ModellingUN-HabitatGreen BuildingConstruction EngineeringUrban Infrastructure
