2026 Vol-6 Issue-1 | INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION AS A STRATEGIC PATHWAY TO IMPROVING GINGER PRODUCTIVITY IN NIGERIA: A REVIEW
The Nigerian ginger value chain has gained increasing attention due to its export potential and role in rural livelihoods; however, productivity and quality remain constrained by limited adoption of improved t e chnologi e s and we ak institutional systems. This review examines innovative technology adoption as a strategic pathway to addressing low ginger productivity in Nigeria. Drawing on recent empirical studies and value-chain analyses, the paper shows that integrated technology packages—combining disease-free planting materials, balanced nutrient management, integrated pest management, mechanisation, and improved post-harvest systems—significantly enhance yields and product quality compared to isolated interventions. Institutional innovations, including farmer cooperatives, contract farming, and cold-chain systems, further improve market access and reduce transaction costs. The Technology A c c e p t a n c e M o d e l ( TA M ) a n d Technology–Organisation–Environment (TOE) framework are applied to explain adoption behaviour among ginger farmers. Despite these benefits, adoption remains uneven due to financial, technical, and infrastructural constraints. Certification systems such as organic and GlobalG.A.P. remain underutilised, with less than 5% of production certified. The study concludes t h a t c o o r d i n a t e d t e c h n o l o g i c a l , institutional, and market-oriented interventions are essential for improving productivity and competitiveness in Nigeria's ginger sector.
