QUESTIONNAIRES IN NURSING RESEARCH: CONCEPTS, TYPES, CHARACTERISTICS, AND APPLICATIONS
Questionnaires are among the most widely utilized data collection tools in nursing research due to their efficiency, versatility, and ability to gather standardized information from large populations. In the context of evidence-based practice, well-designed questionnaires contribute to the accurate assessment of patient outcomes, clinical practices, and healthcare systems. This study aims to explore the concepts, types, characteristics, and applications of questionnaires in nursing research, emphasizing their role in generating reliable and valid data. This study employed a literature review research design, systematically analyzing peer-reviewed articles, methodological papers, and textbooks published between 2015 and 2025. Sources were retrieved from databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, and Google Scholar using keywords related to questionnaires and nursing research. Inclusion criteria focused on studies discussing questionnaire development, validation, and application, while irrelevant and outdated sources were excluded. Data were synthesized using thematic analysis to identify key patterns and insights. Findings indicate that questionnaires in nursing research are broadly categorized into structured, semi-structured, and unstructured types, each serving distinct research purposes. Essential characteristics of effective questionnaires include clarity, reliability, validity, and cultural appropriateness. The literature highlights the importance of pilot testing, Likert scale construction, and psychometric evaluation, including measures such as Cronbach’s alpha. Questionnaires are widely applied in assessing patient satisfaction, clinical competencies, health behaviors, and organizational performance. The study underscores that the effectiveness of questionnaires depends on rigorous design and validation processes. Poorly constructed tools may compromise data quality and research outcomes. Therefore, nurse researchers must possess strong methodological skills to develop and utilize questionnaires appropriately. Integrating standardized instruments and adhering to ethical and scientific standards enhances the credibility of findings and supports evidence-based nursing practice.
