Social factors stymie uptake of OUD medication in veterans

It has long been known that justice‐involved military veterans face a disproportionately high risk of opioid use disorder (OUD) and associated challenges that compromise recovery. A newly published study has captured with greater precision the specific factors that hinder the provision of evidence‐based treatment for this group, citing the experience of food insecurity and violence among the variables associated with lower odds of buprenorphine initiation.

Abstract

It has long been known that justice‐involved military veterans face a disproportionately high risk of opioid use disorder (OUD) and associated challenges that compromise recovery. A newly published study has captured with greater precision the specific factors that hinder the provision of evidence‐based treatment for this group, citing the experience of food insecurity and violence among the variables associated with lower odds of buprenorphine initiation.
