A World on the Brink: War, Moral Failure, and the Crisis of Global Order

"War is a failure of politics and of humanity, a shameful capitulation, a stinging defeat before the forces of evil,” says Pope Francis in Fratelli Tutti (no. 261). No one wants war, but everyone witnesses it. This reality is at the heart of our global crisis. Many believe that human progress in the realms of science, technology, and politics would lead us away from war; but conflicts involving the United States–Israel and Iran remind us how fragile that hope really is. What began as a “regional conflict” has become a global concern in an interconnected world. Hannah Arendt warned that modern violence has the power to engulf entire societies, making war a total reality rather than a distant event (On Violence, 1970, pp. 52-56). In a similar way, Ulrich Beck described our world as a “risk society,” where dangers spread beyond borders and affect all humanity (Risk Society: Toward a New Modernity, 1992, pp. 19-23). War today is no longer someone else’s problem; it is everyone’s burden.
