A Generation Out of Patience: Youth Politics and the Challenge to Post-Colonial Political Orders in Sub-Saharan Africa

A Generation Out of Patience: Youth Politics and the Challenge to Post-Colonial Political Orders in Sub-Saharan Africa examines the mismatch between the demographic weight of youth and the political-economic closure of post-colonial governing systems. Centering South Sudan without treating it as exceptional, the study situates the case within broader debates in youth politics, social movement theory, and generational political economy. It develops the concept of generational pressure politics to explain how demographic change, institutional constraints, and struggles over authority interact to produce new forms of political mobilization. Drawing on comparative analysis of youth protest movements using event data; survey research with youth cohorts in South Sudan, Uganda, and Kenya; social media discourse analysis; and interviews with youth leaders and government officials, the study advances three linked propositions. First, demographic expansion and rising aspirations collide with entrenched political and economic barriers. Second, digital repertoires enable new forms of mobilization while prompting adaptive responses from regimes. Third, episodic protest can evolve into more sustained political challenge under certain structural conditions. The analysis addresses the central question of what shared dynamics—demographic pressure, graduate unemployment, digital connectivity, and political exclusion—underpin diverse youth movements across Africa. It shows that institutions, narratives, and policy frameworks function as political instruments that both constrain and enable generational contestation. The study concludes that reform efforts fail when they respond to symptoms of unrest without addressing underlying structural exclusion, and it identifies pathways for more inc
