Spin-System Selective 2D J-Spectroscopy
Analysis of 1H NMR spectra is commonly hindered by extensive signal overlap due to the narrow chemical shift range and broad multiplet structures. One solution, the use of selective 1D experiments, targets key information and produces spectra that are simpler than those obtained by conventional 1D or 2D methods. Selective experiments are especially useful in mixture analysis, where signals from multiple spin systems routinely overlap, but often lack the resolving power to provide unambiguous separation of signals. A new family of selective 2D NMR methods, spin-system selective 2D J-spectroscopy, is proposed. These experiments generate a 2D J-spectrum containing only the signals of a chosen spin system. The use of 2D J-resolved acquisition enables the separation of chemical shifts and scalar couplings into orthogonal dimensions, greatly reducing the complications that can arise from multiplet overlap.
