Conservative Ayurvedic Management of Meniscus Tear: A Case Report with Functional Outcomes

Background: Meniscus tear is a common knee joint injury characterized by pain, swelling, and functional disability. In Ayurveda, it can be correlated with Sandhigata Vāta (degenerative joint disorder) and Snāyu Kṣata (ligament/cartilage injury) involving aggravated Vāta Doṣa. Objective: To evaluate the role of Ayurvedic management in improving clinical outcomes in meniscus tear. Methods: A 54-year-old female with MRI-confirmed Grade III posterior horn medial meniscus tear was managed with internal medications and external therapies including Snehana, Lepa, Svedana, and Bandhana over 24 days. Results: Significant improvement was observed: pain (VAS) reduced from 9 to 1, swelling and tenderness subsided, and range of motion improved. Functional limitations resolved with negative special tests. Conclusion: Ayurvedic management shows promising results in reducing symptoms and improving function in meniscus injuries, potentially minimizing complications like post-traumatic osteoarthritis. Keywords: Meniscus tear, Sandhigata Vāta, Snāyu Kṣata, Vāta Doṣa, DJD
