Do China’s pilot free trade zones improve green land use efficiency?

Background Improving green land use efficiency (GLUE) is critical for rational land utilization and the transition toward a green development paradigm. As experimental platforms for institutional innovation, pilot free trade zones (PFTZs) improve GLUE through innovative institutional practices. This study explores how PFTZs affect GLUE in China. Methods Based on data from regional panels in China between 2004 and 2022, this study employs the multi-period DID model to examine the impact of PFTZs on GLUE. Results The results show that PFTZs significantly contribute to the positive growth of GLUE, with heterogeneity in geographical location and financial development levels. Market-oriented reforms, industrial structure advancement, and green technology innovation are identified as three vital pathways. Additionally, industrial agglomeration and environmental regulation can strengthen the positive impact of PFTZs on GLUE. Conclusion This study provides important empirical evidence for leveraging the institutional innovation experience of PFTZs to enhance GLUE.

Abstract

Background Improving green land use efficiency (GLUE) is critical for rational land utilization and the transition toward a green development paradigm. As experimental platforms for institutional innovation, pilot free trade zones (PFTZs) improve GLUE through innovative institutional practices. This study explores how PFTZs affect GLUE in China.
