Global Partnerships in Juvenile Justice

Addressing complex social issues that span national borders requires collaborative approaches that integrate diverse perspectives, resources, and expertise. However, building effective international partnerships across countries, languages, and institutions requires careful planning and structured strategies. The Global Consortium on Juvenile Delinquency and Prevention (hereafter, the Consortium) offers a real-world example of how such collaborations can succeed. The Consortium unites researchers, practitioners, and policymakers from Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, Norway, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States to exchange best practices and develop practical solutions to juvenile justice challenges. Over the course of six years, the Consortium identified three significant challenges: managing multilingual communication, ensuring equitable participation, and coordinating activities among organizations with differing priorities. Instead of seeing these challenges as obstacles, the Consortium turned them into opportunities for growth. They implemented strategies such as hiring professional translators, promoting cultural understanding, rotating leadership roles, and offering flexible funding. Establishing trust through collaborative activities, such as co-authoring publications with local practitioners, led to partnerships with juvenile justice facilities across multiple countries and the publication of ten studies. The insights gained from these experiences provide practical guidance for international collaborations focused on healthcare, education, environmental sustainability, and other global challenges.
