Facile Photo‐Crosslinked Methacrylated Choline Chloride–Alginate Hydrogels With Enhanced Biocompatibility, Angiogenesis, and Antibacterial Potential

ABSTRACT Ionic liquid‐modified hydrogels are attracting considerable attention for biomedical applications due to their unique combination of properties. In this study, we report the synthesis of choline chloride‐modified alginate hydrogels designed to enhance cytocompatibility, antibacterial activity, and angiogenic potential. Methacrylated alginate was photo‐crosslinked with varying molar ratios (1, 0.75, 0.5, and 0.25) of methacrylated choline chloride (METAC) using a simple and efficient protocol. The resulting hydrogels were comprehensively characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) for functional group analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for morphological assessment, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) for thermal stability. Mechanical properties and electrical conductivity were also evaluated. The optimized hydrogel formulations exhibited significantly improved cytocompatibility, robust antibacterial activity, and superior angiogenic properties. The hydrogels exhibited potent antibacterial activity, with inhibition zones of 13–15 mm, and the S1 formulation significantly promoted angiogenesis. In vitro assays revealed exceptional cytocompatibility, supporting 90%–200% fibroblast viability. These multifunctional characteristics make the choline chloride‐modified alginate hydrogels promising candidates for wound healing and a range of advanced biomedical applications.

Abstract

These multifunctional characteristics make the choline chloride‐modified alginate hydrogels promising candidates for wound healing and a range of advanced biomedical applications.
