Thermodynamic and phase equilibrium model for the Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Mn // Cl, F system: Part I. MnF2-based binary common-ion sub-systems

This study focuses on the development of a thermodynamic model for the Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Mn // Cl, F chloro-fluoride salt system, which may be used as a flux for recycling Mn-containing aluminum alloys. The CALPHAD approach was applied, and a consistent thermodynamic description of all condensed phases was obtained for the MnF 2 -containing sub-systems. The Modified Quasichemical Model was used to describe the Gibbs energy of the molten salt solution while the Compound Energy Formalism was employed for the solid solutions. This is the first of two articles on the optimization of the Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Mn // Cl, F system. This paper presents the thermodynamic model for the six MnF 2 -containing binary sub-systems : LiF-MnF 2 , NaF-MnF 2 , KF-MnF 2 , MgF 2 -MnF 2 , CaF 2 -MnF 2 , and MnCl 2 -MnF 2 . All available phase diagram and thermodynamic data were collected and critically evaluated, and optimized model parameters were obtained. • Thermodynamic modeling of six MnF 2 -based binary common-ion systems. • The Modified Quasichemical Model was used to describe the energetics of the molten salt phase. • The Compound Energy Formalism was used for the thermodynamic description of all solid solutions.
