Diagnosis of Amoebic Peritonitis in Peritoneal Fluid in a Patient With Acute Intestinal Obstruction: A Case Report
Amoebiasis, caused by the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica, is an important infectious disease primarily affecting the gastrointestinal tract, with the potential for extraintestinal spread. Although many infections remain asymptomatic, invasive disease can result in significant morbidity and may present with varied and sometimes atypical clinical manifestations, posing diagnostic challenges. The spectrum of disease ranges from mild intestinal symptoms to severe, life-threatening complications. Detection of amoebic trophozoites in peritoneal fluid is exceedingly uncommon and usually indicates advanced invasive disease or intestinal perforation, making it a rare but clinically significant finding.
