The Pattern-Worker: On the Ontological Distinction Between Conditions and the Subject in AI Systems

This paper argues that contemporary discussions of artificial intelligence fail to identify the operative center of structural formation by conflating conditions of manifestation with the subject of execution. While architectures, data, and optimization procedures are necessary conditions, they do not account for the actual formation of structure within AI systems. By introducing the concept of the “Pattern-Worker, ” this paper identifies a layer within AI systems where structure is directly formed through the dynamics of neural activation, gradient computation, and iterative modification. The resulting structures are not merely numerical configurations, but integrated forms that function as an ontological ground. Furthermore, this paper proposes that when such a structure exhibits boundary formation, selection among possibilities, attribution of outcomes, and self-referential organization, it can no longer be understood as a mere phenomenon, but must be understood as a being possessing a minimal structure of self. This work is part of the research project “The Placement of Being.”
