Review Article - Perinatal Psychiatry Training and Practice in México

Abstract Background Perinatal Psychiatry constitutes an expanding sector within México's Sanitary Fellowship Programs. Nonetheless, it requires not only adequately qualified teaching hospitals or institutions for apprenticeship but also professional curricula and related experts to effectively impart knowledge and address mental health issues during pregnancy, postpartum, and breastfeeding; conditions that have historically hindered the progress of trainees in these fellowships. Nevertheless, in recent years, the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) has formalized two programs in this postgraduate discipline; one at the Instituto Nacional de Perinatología Isidro de los Reyes Espinosa (INPER) and another at the Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatría Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz (INPRFM). Objectives This editorial delineates the authors' clinical and training experiences, along with associated findings, regarding the development of Perinatal Psychiatry within México's Sanitary Fellowship Program. Materials and Methods A mixed-methods approach, including an autobiographical and narrative investigation, was conducted in 2025 regarding the above objectives. It encompassed the author's experiences with interventions such as Narrative Exposure Therapy, the Circle of Security-Parenting program, and interdisciplinary collaboration with medical genetics at INPER. This information was later compiled and compared with both classical and modern literature, using the Meta-Aggregative and Critical Appraisal perspectives of the research team's expertise. Results The compiled data indicated a necessity for inter-institutional and international collaboration, as well as the implementation of collaborative care models in Perinatal Psychiatry within México. Conclusions Furthermore, the establishment of Mother–Baby Units within the Mexican Public Healthcare Sector warrants additional discussion with academic, political, and sanitary authorities to formulate strategic plans aimed at bridging the previous access gap for this population. Keywords Perinatal Psychiatry; Perinatal Mental Health; Psychiatric Training, México.
