ENSURING PARTICIPANT PROTECTION: THE ROLE OF ANONYMITY AND CONFIDENTIALITY IN NURSING RESEARCH

Safeguarding research participants constitutes a paramount ethical imperative in nursing inquiry, particularly in studies involving sensitive personal and clinical data. The principles of anonymity and confidentiality are indispensable in upholding participants’ rights, preserving dignity, and fostering trust. This study elucidates the pivotal role of these ethical safeguards in ensuring participant protection and enhancing research integrity within contemporary nursing research paradigms. Employing a descriptive research design, the study examined nurses’ perceptions regarding anonymity and confidentiality. A convenience sample of registered nurses from a tertiary healthcare institution participated through a structured self-administered questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, to generate a comprehensive depiction of prevailing practices and attitudes. Findings revealed that a substantial proportion of respondents demonstrated a profound cognizance of the significance of anonymity and confidentiality in research engagement. Participants reported heightened willingness to participate and greater candor in responses when assured of data protection. Nonetheless, discernible lacunae in consistent application and awareness of ethical protocols were identified, indicating areas necessitating further professional development. The study underscores that anonymity and confidentiality are not merely ethical adjuncts but foundational requisites for credible and methodologically sound research. Reinforcing these principles augments participant trust, mitigates apprehension, and fortifies data veracity. Consequently, institutional reinforcement, continuous ethical training, and stringent data governance mechanisms are imperative to sustain ethical compliance and research excellence.
