Promoted decomposition of NOx in diesel exhaust by a module of electrochemical double-cell plates

The technology of promoted NOx decomposition (PND) has been carried out here for removing NOx (deNOx) in diesel exhaust. PND does not consume any reagent or other resources. By using commercially available plate consisting of only electrolyte and cathode, called a half-cell plate in this work, a simplest electrochemical double-cell plate (EDP) is formed as a sandwich of two half-cell plates attaching a metal or alloy plate as the anode. Mass production of such EDPs is done here with magnesium alloy plate as the anode. These EDPs form a module to perform promoted decomposition of NOx in diesel exhaust. NOx can be removed effectively. The deNOx rate increases with NOx concentration up to over 1500 ppm NOx for highly efficient diesel engines. This work is a feasibility study on this newly-invented EDP and this feasibility has been verified for further studies on PND via EDPs' module for real-world implementations.
