Empowering the energy transition through power electronics and its applications

This editorial article aims to introduce the twenty-two research contributions selected from European Power Electronics and Applications (EPE’25) conference. The collection represents significant advances across multiple dimensions of power electronics, from fundamental component design and device characterization to system-level applications and reliability assessment. The papers address critical challenges in converter topology optimization, magnetic component design, wide-bandgap device characterization and modeling, current sensing and measurement technologies, motor drive control, reliability frameworks, and sustainable system integration. Collectively, these works demonstrate the field’s evolution toward higher power density, improved efficiency, enhanced reliability, and environmental sustainability. Key themes include the exploitation of wide-bandgap semiconductors (SiC and GaN), innovative approaches to electromagnetic interference mitigation, advanced magnetic component design, contactless sensing technologies, real-time optimization algorithms, sensorless motor control with adaptive parameter identification, and the integration of power electronics into sustainable transportation and energy infrastructure. The special issue provides valuable insights for researchers, designers, and practitioners working to advance power electronic systems for applications ranging from aerospace and automotive to maritime transportation, electric vehicle infrastructure, and data center power supplies.
