1,2,6‐Thiadiazin‐4‐ones: Robust Photocatalysts for the Green Aerobic Oxidation of Sulfides to Sulfoxides

The chemoselective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides is accomplished using a new family of photocatalysts, namely 1,2,6‐thiadiazin‐4‐ones. Utilizing a low catalyst loading (0.01 mol%), a 440 nm lamp as the irradiation source, and molecular oxygen as the oxidant, this rapid method is applicable to a broad range of alkyl‐aryl, dialkyl, and diaryl sulfides. Additionally, the method demonstrates practical relevance for the industrially significant synthesis of pharmaceutical compounds, including modafinil and sulforaphane.
