Phytochemical Composition and Therapeutic Potential of Psidium guajava Leaves

Background: India is renowned for its rich biological diversity, and plants like Psidium guajava (guava) have been recognized in the pharmaceutical sector for their wide range of therapeutic properties. Guava’s leaves, fruits, and bark contain various phytochemicals with potential health benefits. Methods: This study explored the phytochemical composition of the ethanolic extract of Psidium guajava and evaluated its antioxidant, antidiabetic activities at various concentrations (200ul, 400ul, 600ul, 800ul, 1000ul). Anticancer activity and wound healing activity were performed on concentrations (20ul, 40ul, 60ul, 80ul, 100ul). Qualitative phytochemical analysis was performed, and antioxidant properties were tested using the DPPH method. Antidiabetic potential was assessed through alpha-amylase inhibition, and anticancer effects were evaluated using the MTT assay with A549 human lung cancer cells. Wound healing was tested using the scratch assay method. Results: Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of steroids, terpenoids, glycosides, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins. The guava extract exhibited significant antioxidant and antidiabetic effects. The anticancer activity was notable against A549 cells, and the extract demonstrated positive wound-healing activity in the scratch assay. Discussion: Psidium guajava possesses significant therapeutic potential, including antioxidant, antidiabetic, anticancer, and wound-healing effects. The plant’s bioactive compounds contribute to these properties, making it a promising candidate for the development of natural therap Conclusion: Psidium guajava, with its rich phytochemical composition, shows promising potential as a therapeutic agent against cancer, diabetes, oxidative stress, and for promoting wound healing. Further studies are needed to understand its medicinal properties and clinical applications.
