The semantic interplay of semantic radicals and host phonograms in chinese transparent character processing
In the realm of Chinese character processing, the semantic activation of semantic radicals and their host phonograms is an intriguing topic. Against the backdrop of previous research which hardly investigated the machinery causing the semantic activation event, the present study is specifically dedicated to addressing this gap. Through an elaborate experiment, employing a priming part of speech judgment task based on the foot semantic radical, the study revealed that the host transparent phonograms incorporating foot semantic radicals demonstrated a significantly greater priming effect than the summation of the priming effect of the host opaque phonograms incorporating foot semantic radicals and that of phonograms which were only foot-related meaning loaded. This unexpected priming enhancement effect suggested a reciprocal interplay between the semantic information of the semantic radicals and that of their host phonograms, introducing a novel source of the semantic information that was engaged in bringing about the semantic activation event.
