The Structural Limits of Modern Science: Freedom, Control, and Data Unambiguity

This paper examines the structural limits of modern scientific progress. Despite exponential growth in publications, funding, and researcher population, the marginal efficiency of science appears to be declining. Existing explanations focus on increasing complexity and the “burden of knowledge”. This work introduces an extended structural model: E ∝ (F × U) / C where F is scientific freedom, C is institutional control, and U is data unambiguity. The paper argues that persistent ambiguity in data structures is a critical but underexplored constraint on scientific efficiency, affecting reproducibility, comparability, and cumulative knowledge formation. A corrective framework based on CTMinfo is proposed, emphasizing SmallData, ontological precision, and verifiable data structures. The results suggest that without structural changes, scientific efficiency will tend toward stagnation despite increasing inputs.
