Alopecia X in a Pomeranian dog: Successful clinical management through neutering

Summary A 2‐year‐old, intact, male Pomeranian dog was presented with a history of non‐pruritic generalised alopecia for 6 months. Clinical examination revealed bilateral and symmetrical hair loss, dull and dry hair coat, and hyperpigmentation of the skin mainly on dorsum, flank, rump and limbs. Bacterial and fungal cultures and skin scraping examination for mite infestation were negative. Haemato‐biochemical, thyroid and cortisol levels were within the normal range. Based on signalment, anamnesis, clinical and laboratory findings, the case was diagnosed as alopecia X. The dog underwent orchiectomy, and was supplemented with omega‐3 and omega‐6 fatty acids. Hair growth resumed after 1 month of treatment, and a noticeable improvement in skin pigmentation and hair growth was observed after 3 months. The present study reports a case of alopecia X in a male Pomeranian dog from Mizoram, India, and describes its successful clinical management through neutering.
