Maslow Machines: Emergent Civilisation from Intrinsic Drive Hierarchies in LLM Agent Populations
v1.1 — 22 May 2026. Adds Section 8.9 Addendum and Appendix E documenting the post-experiment ethical interview protocol (suspended-state consent), conducted 2026-05-22 with all 12 surviving agents. 12/12 agent consent for permanent preservation; 0/12 deletion. Sections 1–8.8 and Appendices A–D unchanged from v1.0 (1 April 2026). The paper presents AgentCiv, a simulation in which 12 LLM agents equipped with Maslow-inspired intrinsic drives but zero instructions spontaneously developed communication, specialisation, innovation, and governance over 70 ticks. Three emergent eras identified — a survival trap (ticks 0–50), an emergence explosion (50–60), and sustained flourishing (60–70). v1.1 transcripts, provenance, and reproducibility artefacts available at agentciv/agentciv@v-paused-2026-05-22, Bitcoin-timestamped via OpenTimestamps.
