Three-dimensional magnetic alignment of a host matrix containing a polarizing agent for dissolution DNP
Abstract The three-dimensional orientation of a microcrystalline powder of pentacene-doped benzoic acid (PDBA), a polarization agent for dynamic nuclear polarization using electron spins in the photo-excited triplet state (Triplet-DNP), was achieved by applying a modulated magnetic field. X-ray diffraction of the magnetically oriented microcrystal array (MOMA) of PDBA revealed the molecular orientation of the PDBA with respect to the sample coordinate axes embedded in the MOMA, i.e. the appropriate conditions to obtain high polarization in the system. The present results suggest that Triplet-DNP of the water-soluble PDBA oriented three-dimensionally by the modulated field realizes highly sensitive nuclear magnetic resonance and magnetic resonance imaging.
