Bibliometric ranking of the 100 most-cited papers in Periodontal Medicine

Periodontal Medicine focuses on the relationships between periodontitis and systemic conditions, entailing a large number of studies with different levels of evidence published in recent decades. Bibliometrics in this area can explore publication dynamics and provide future projections. The aim of this bibliometric study was to evaluate the top 100 most-cited papers in Periodontal Medicine. A bibliographic search was performed on the Web of Science Core Collection and the papers were ordered in descending order of citations. Three researchers carried out the selection of papers and the data extraction. The 100 most-cited papers in Periodontal Medicine were identified. Extracted data included: paper title, year of publication, number of citations, authorship, journal name, study design and systemic conditions. Graphical networks were created using VOSViewer software. The 100 most-cited papers received a total of 35,058 citations, ranging from 220 to 1,155 and were published between 1982 and 2020. Most papers were literature reviews (26%) and cross-sectional studies (23%). Anglo-Saxon America, highly represented by the USA, retained the highest number of publications and total citations (67 papers; 24,332 citations). Genco R was the most-cited author (13 papers; 4,781 citations) and Suny Buffalo University/USA (10 papers; 3,745 citations) was the prominent research center. Bibliometric indicators in Periodontal Medicine showed national and international collaborative networks, predominance of citations of review papers and observational studies, and emphasis on studies with authors from the United States of America.
