To Instruct All Better: Using multimodal tools to accommodate multiple learning styles when teaching database literacy skills to business students.
The concepts of multiple intelligences and learning styles are the guiding framework for this instruction plus format offered to community college business students. Multiple learning tools were used to supplement an assignment based one shot session over the course of five years. Instead of relying solely on the single “sage on a stage” presentation by a librarian, students were given instructive “how-to” paper documentation on finding the database and conducting a basic search at the presentation -including an accessible digital version. The librarian also offered students a captioned “How-To” screencast to be viewed ‘at will.’ The handout and the screencast were embedded and aggregated along with the assignment and database access on a simple dedicated lLbGuide - a shareable one stop, on-demand resource that digitally supported the presentation. Multiple avenues to learn lead to better engagement and positive outcomes.
