Controlled Placement of Trivalent Heteroatoms in MFI Zeolite Frameworks Using Structure-Directing Agents
-xylene selectivity (∼80%). These selectivities are consistent with DFT-calculated Gibbs free energy barriers for intersection-dominant and channel-dominant active site distributions, respectively. Transition states to form each xylene isomer are similar in size and charge; thus, their rate constants decrease with acid strength similarly, causing isomer selectivity to depend strongly on confinement but not on acid strength. These generalizable synthetic strategies enable independently controlling acid site strength and location in MFI zeolites and, in turn, catalytic rates and selectivities.
