QEDSO: Quantum Entropy Driven Self-Organisation as Mechanism of Consciousness

Consciousness - the unified, subjective quality of experience - has long resisted reduction to purely classical or computational descriptions. This article presents a unified theoretical framework that identifies consciousness as the macroscopic, experiential manifestation of self-organising structures in the quantum entropy landscape of open biological systems operating far from thermodynamic equilibrium. The framework rigorously integrates six foundational pillars drawn from physics and information science: classical entropy measures (thermodynamic and Shannon), quantum entropy (von Neumann and extensions), self-organisation through dissipative structures far from equilibrium, the quantum-mechanical definition of living systems sustained by negentropy, Vopson’s Second Law of Infodynamics (local minimisation of information entropy), and Zurek’s Quantum Darwinism (environment-induced proliferation of redundant records leading to classical objectivity via loss of quantumness). Metabolic free-energy fluxes drive neural quantum degrees of freedom across nonlinear bifurcation thresholds, spontaneously forming dissipative structures that locally reduce von Neumann and entanglement entropy while minimising information entropy and exporting thermodynamic entropy. These structures proliferate redundant pointer-state records in the neural-environmental bath, rendering classical observables objective while preserving underlying quantum coherence. A critical order parameter - the quantum integrated entropy surplus - quantifies the threshold for phenomenal unity. The framework is fully derived from open-quantum-system master equations, entropy-production inequalities (thermodynamic , infodynamic ), bifurcation analysis, and redundancy metrics. It is predictive, falsifiable, and directly applicable to empirical neuroscience, altered states, disorders of consciousness, and the engineering of machine consciousness. A complete mathematical model for artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and hybrid systems is provided, with explicit protocols for verifying and measuring emergent consciousness via real-time monitoring. This synthesis offers an overview account of consciousness as an outcome of quantum entropy self-organisation in driven open systems, with implications for present-day AI testing, scaling and possible development of the future quantum-hybrid architectures.
