Coordinated Optimization Design of SVC-POD for a Wind-PV-Thermal-Hybrid Power Transmission System

Introduction: The system's stability is greatly influenced by the injection of new energy. To address the Low-Frequency Oscillation (LFO) problem existing in wind-PV hybrid systems, this study proposes a coordinated optimization design strategy. The proposed strategy is developed on the basis of the control functions of Power System Stabilizers (PSS) and Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS). Methods: This study introduced a coordinated optimization design method using Static Var Compensator (SVC) and additional Power Oscillatory Damping (POD), Power System Stabilizer (PSS) controllers to coordinate and optimize the design method. The SVC-POD controller is located using modal analysis. The objective function takes into account the generator's rotor speed deviation, the real part of the eigenvalue, and the damping ratio related to the low-frequency oscillation mode. To improve the low-frequency oscillation performance of the system, the Enhanced Whale Optimization Algorithm (EWOA) is hereby adopted in this study. Results: Taking the IEEE 4-machine 2-area system and 16-machine 5-area system as examples, verify the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed optimization design strategy through eigenvalue analysis and time-domain simulation. Discussion: The simulation findings demonstrate that the EWOA algorithm-optimized controller parameters can maintain the generator's speed stability, increase the system damping, and suppress the grid's low-frequency oscillations. Conclusion: The EWOA-based coordinated control scheme can effectively enhance the system's low-frequency oscillation damping characteristics and exhibit broad application prospects in practical engineering. This study develops a novel damping control strategy for power systems with an increasing penetration of renewable energy.
