Improvement of reconstructed images of phase-only holograms degraded by crosstalk of spatial light modulators

Phase-only holograms are suitable for high-energy applications and augmented reality displays. However, phase-modulation spatial light modulators (SLMs) have nonnegligible interpixel crosstalk, which degrades the reconstructed images of phase-only holograms. In this study, the characteristics of diffraction efficiency as a function of spatial frequency degraded by the crosstalk of SLMs are mathematically modeled as a lowpass filter. Then, the lowpass filter is introduced into optimization techniques for phase-only holograms, including the Gerchberg–Saxton (GS) and limited-memory Broyden–Fletcher–Goldfarb–Shanno (L-BFGS) algorithms, to improve the quality of the reconstructed images. Experimental results verified that the modified algorithms effectively compensated for degradation in the reconstructed images.
