Hybrid Plastic Waste Treatment System: Chemical Pre-Treatment and Microbial Biodegradation for Municipal Waste Reduction
Plastic waste poses a persistent environmental challenge due to its durability and resistance to natural degradation. This paper presents a hybrid plastic waste treatment system combining chemical pre-treatment with microbial or enzyme-assisted biodegradation. The system is designed for municipal-scale deployment, diverting up to 60% of plastic waste from landfills. Pilot-scale calculations (1 ton/day) demonstrate annual landfill land savings of 165–182 m² and operating surpluses under a service-fee model. The approach integrates environmental benefit with economic feasibility, positioning waste treatment as a municipal service rather than a product-based business.
