Severe rhabdomyolysis and Guillain-Barré syndrome in an unimmunized adult with measles virus infection: a case report
Measles cases in Europe have been exponentially increasing in recent years, exposing a growing number of unimmunized individuals to severe and/or uncommon disease manifestations. We hereby describe a unique case of an unvaccinated adult with measles virus infection who developed the rare co-occurrence of severe rhabdomyolysis and Guillain-Barré syndrome. The patient also had transaminitis and profound thrombocytopenia, and fully recovered after supportive treatment and intravenous immunoglobulin therapy, with no chronic sequelae. This case highlights the need for increased clinical awareness and close laboratory and neurological monitoring in adult patients with measles.
