A Case Study on the Growth and Downfall of BYJU'S in the Global EdTech Market

This case study explores BYJU'S meteoric rise from a fledgling start-up in India to an established multi-billion dollar enterprise over a short time frame through innovative pedagogy, aggressive marketing initiatives, and strategic acquisitions. There were various factors that contributed to BYJU’S success, including instructional improvement, strong investor support, and the unprecedented rate at which digital tools were adopted globally as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the report also assesses with a critical lens the factors that have contributed to BYJU’S downfall, including but not limited to: unsustainable financial practices, the continued expansion of the business through acquisitions, failures in corporate governance, and loss of customer confidence. Also presented in the study are two tables providing a side-by-side comparison of BYJU'S growth compared to its decline. The first table illustrates BYJU’S continuing evolution as a company moving from a phase of deliberate and innovative growth to a period of uncontrolled, unmanaged scalable growth, as evidenced by the accumulation of debt and intensified lack of corporate governance. In addition to providing valuable comparative analyses, the study provides several recommendations for discipline in the acquisition process, reforms in corporate governance, revised strategies to sell ethically, and development of a profitable growth model. Overall, this research provides invaluable insight for all start-up companies in the education technology sector, highlighting the importance of sustainable business practices, transparency of actions throughout the company, and strong corporate governance structures.
