Ultrahigh Tensile Strength of Rock

We succeeded in obtaining previously unimaginable high tensile strengths of rock using dog-bone-shaped specimens. The studied slate showed a direct tensile strength of about 70 MPa. The direct tensile strength is more than twice the maximum reported in previous studies and sets a world record for rock.

Abstract

We succeeded in obtaining previously unimaginable high tensile strengths of rock using dog-bone-shaped specimens. The studied slate showed a direct tensile strength of about 70 MPa. The direct tensile strength is more than twice the maximum reported in previous studies and sets a world record for rock.
