Perspective Shift Technique: A Clinical Method for Perspective-Based Memory Updating in Hypnotherapy

This paper introduces the Perspective Shift Technique (PST; 人格移動, jinkaku idō), a clinical method developed by the present author, in which a client experientially inhabits a perspective attributed to another person from within a hypnotherapeutic context while simultaneously maintaining self-continuity and a self-observing position. The technique is hypothesized to create conditions that may support updating of fixed interpersonal memory-related responses. Memory reconsolidation is discussed as one possible explanatory framework for such change, but the present paper does not claim that PST has been demonstrated to induce neurobiological destabilization or reconsolidation.PST differs from existing perspective-taking methods such as the empty chair technique in three clinically proposed respects: its use of hypnosis to facilitate focused experiential access; the structural emphasis on dual awareness; and a clinical indicator of experiential change that the present author terms tokushin (得心), an embodied moment of conviction distinct from both cognitive insight and emotional catharsis. Tokushin involves the arrival of unexpected understanding accompanied by felt or somatic change — a shift experienced as more than a new thought or emotional discharge. It should not, however, be regarded as a biological marker of memory reconsolidation. The paper describes the theoretical basis of PST, its five-stage procedural structure, three characteristic failure modes and their clinical management, a comparative analysis with existing methods, and the range of clinical applications. PST is proposed as a transmodal technique applicable within hypnotherapy, age regression work, somatic approaches, and grief therapy.
