Probabilistic Multi-Hazard Seismic Assessment of Circular Elevated Water Tanks considering Soil Class and Seismic Zone Interactions with Staging and Material Strength Variability
The study evaluates the seismic behaviour of the elevated circular water tank by analysing the joint influences of staging height, soil type and intensity of earthquakes. Using the structural analysis across Indian Seismic Zones II, III, and V, the research considers these factors and examines key response parameters such as storey displacement, drift and overturning moments for staging heights of 12m, 15m and 18m on hard, medium and soft soils. The result shows that zone V constantly produces the highest seismic demands. Interestingly, the structural response is non-linear for many of configurations such as displacement and drift dropped significantly at 15m staging and then increased again at 18m as of the reason of the optimal height for stability. The overturning moments rises with the height as a result of the long lever arm effect. The responses are enhanced by the soft soil conditions especially in high seismic areas. These finding highlights the critical importance of selecting appropriate staging heights and considering soil structure interaction to enhance the safety and resilience of the elevated water tanks in earthquake prone regions.
