Empowering the next generation of clinical cancer researchers: Structure, activities, and vision of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Young and Early Career Investigator (Y-ECI) network

The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) is a leading international academic non-profit organization dedicated to advancing cancer care through multidisciplinary clinical cancer research. Investing in the next generation of clinical researchers is central to this mission, motivating the establishment of the Young and Early Career Investigator (Y-ECI) community. The Y-ECI network encompasses investigators at an early career stage, representing nearly one third of the EORTC membership. The network is structured to promote research involvement, leadership development, and cross-disciplinary collaboration across EORTC disease-oriented groups (DOGs). Y-ECIs are actively engaged in EORTC activities, including participation in clinical trials as study co-coordinators, principal investigators or sub-investigators, as well as involvement in research projects, DOG steering committees, and educational initiatives. A motivation survey among EORTC Y-ECIs indicated a strong interest in research-focused activities, particularly clinical trial support, literature reviews, and study development, with a consistent engagement over time, as well as interest in undertaking active roles within the EORTC. The Y-ECI community facilitates educational opportunities, including methodological workshops, career development courses, fellowships, webinars, and conference sessions. Overall, the EORTC Y-ECI network provides a comprehensive and sustainable model for integrating Y-ECIs into academic oncology research. By fostering scientific and professional development, collaboration, and leadership among Y-ECIs, it plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of clinical cancer research within EORTC and in Europe.
