A Review of Synthetic and Natural Rubber Latex as Polymer Modifiers in Concrete: Impacts, Advancement, and Applications
Polymer latex such as natural rubber latex (NRL) and synthetic rubber latex are derived from renewable and synthetic sources, offering distinct benefits as a concrete modifier. This review paper investigates advancements in concrete technology by incorporating NRL and different polymer latexes, such as styrene butadiene rubber (SBR). It focuses on their impacts on concrete’s mechanical properties, durability, and potential applications in construction and explains the mechanism of latex-modified concrete. Based on an extensive literature review, this paper highlights the fundamental role of these admixtures in enhancing concrete’s flexibility, moisture resistance, and bonding strength with cement paste and aggregates compared to conventional concrete. This paper describes the unique properties of NRL-modified concrete and its resilience under different environmental conditions and correlates them to the properties of concrete incorporated with SBR and other polymer latexes. The study discusses the challenges and gaps in the current research on the effects of latex type and concentration on concrete qualities. It also emphasizes the need for more empirical studies to formulate better additives for achieving better concrete performance. The review aims to direct future research and practical applications in sustainable construction methods and highlights the potential of NRL-modified concrete in improving construction material technology.
