Numerical Simulation of Impact‐Induced Seismic Wave Generation and Propagation Using a Coupled Approach

Abstract Impact‐induced seismic waves play an important role in determining impact parameters and provide insights into the internal structure of planets. Numerical simulations form the foundation for understanding the generation and propagation patterns of impact‐induced seismic waves and analyzing the data associated with these waves. To obtain a credible impact‐induced seismic wavefield, we proposed a coupling approach to simulate the impact‐induced seismic waves by combining the iSALE shock physics code with a conventional seismic‐wave solver, which solves the elastic wave equations. We initially conducted simulations using iSALE to study the generation and propagation patterns of impact‐induced wavefields. Subsequently, at appropriate locations, when the shock wave is attenuated and the elastic part of the wave dominates, we exported the simulated data from iSALE as input for seismic wave simulations. Our numerical simulation results demonstrate that the coupled approach provides a more realistic description of the source signal than standalone seismic wave simulation and more accurate linear‐elastic propagation modeling than standalone iSALE.
