035 | Shkodra lake – Drini river basin and buna in UNESCO Transboundary Biosphere Reserve: values to be protected and used in a sustainable way

The basin of Drini river and Shkodra lake are located in Northen Albania. Shkodra Lake is a cross-border wetland-ecosystem in between Albania and Montenegro. It is proposed in 2025 to be a UNESCO Transboundary Biosphere Reserve. In the area there is a big natural and cultural richness, a lot of biodiversity and clean food products. Cultural heritage it is assessed in both sides of the lake in Albanian and Montenegrin part. There are analysed a series of ecological problems, the quality of the biodiversity and the land erosion, problems that affect the community life. It was recognized that it is indispensable to prevent such a problem and to minimize and mitigate the negative impact of the climate changes in the Region. Sustainable development and sustainable use of lands in Drini River basin and in Shkodra lake is the most effective way to prevent the damage of the nature and the loose of the biodiversity. Law enforcement for illegal constructions and damage on the shores is considered necessary too. It was presented also a list of recommendations for adoption of new strategies and methodologies in sustainable use of the area in both parts of the lake is done and a list of necessary actions to involve actors in the right management of the Regional area.
